Rwanda Rwamatamu Kirunga Lot 4
Kirunga means ‘Volcano’ in Kinyarwanda, the national language of Rwanda. This coffee was processed at Rwamatamu’s Mbare washing station, situated in Muhanga, Southern Province. Once it arrives, the cherries are sorted by hand before being placed into sealed tanks so that natural yeasts and bacteria have time to develop and encourage fruity flavours in the resulting coffee. Next, the coffee is spread out to dry on raised beds for 26-33 days depending on the weather, then gets taken to the milling facilities in Kigali, where the coffee is dehusked, polished, and graded. Rwamatamu is a family-owned coffee producer that was established in 2015 by husband and wife team Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laeticia. They started cultivating coffee in an effort to make a positive impact on their local community while also providing for their family. The venture was successful, and as the farm grew in size and profit, so did their passion for growing incredible coffee. Community is a huge focus for Rwamatamu, and as such the team have strong relationships with the farmers in Nymasheke and Mbare that they work with.

For someone who typically leans toward washed coffees, this anaerobic ferment is giving me exactly what I want in a Rwandan. Lovely notes of blackcurrant, subtle stone fruit and sparkling lemonade. An absolute belter.
About Rwanda
The majority of coffee in Rwanda is grown by small-scale farmers, typically organised into cooperatives that share the services of centralised wet-mills. Almost all of Rwanda’s coffee is one of several long-established Bourbon varieties. This is closely guarded by the country’s government and gives Rwandan coffees a unique bright fruitiness and acidity.

Following the genocide, coffee production was one of the key drivers of economic growth. Rwanda is now one of the ‘go to’ origins for specialty coffee today.
